Masjed is built to use as little of your data as possible. This page explains, in plain words, what the Masjed apps and this website do with data.
In short
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking cookies.
- Prayer times, the Quran, reciting with the microphone and everything else work without an account. An account is optional; you need one only to run a mosque.
- Prayer times, athan, qibla, adhkar and the Quran work on your phone, even without internet.

Your location
The app reads your location only when you tap "Use my current location". It does not follow you in the background.
Prayer times and the qibla are calculated on your phone. To show the name of your city, the app rounds your position to about 1 km and sends only that, once, to our server. Our server asks Photon, a place search based on OpenStreetMap data, for the name. Photon only sees our server, not you. We do not save your position. The city name is kept in the server's memory for up to 7 days, with no link to you. A place you search for by name takes the same route.
Following a mosque
When you scan a mosque's code or pick a mosque, the app loads that mosque's times from our server and keeps about the next 60 days on your phone. It checks for changes about twice a day. Our server keeps no list of who follows which mosque.
Reciting the Quran
"Follow my recitation" listens through the microphone while it is on. Normally the sound goes to our server, where a speech model trained on Quran recitation finds your place. The sound is processed in memory and dropped right away. We never save audio or text.
You can recite without an account. While you recite, the app notes the time and the ayat it follows, as your progress. It saves no sound and no text. Without an account this progress stays on your device; with one it is also kept with your account (see “Your account”).
If our server cannot be reached, the app uses your phone's own speech recognition instead. Apple, Google or your browser may then process the sound on their servers, under their own privacy terms.
Without Masjed Plus AI, our server follows you for 10 minutes a day; after them, your phone's own speech recognition takes over. To count these minutes, also without an account, the app sends a random number made on your device, which names nothing else. Our server keeps how long each device and each internet address recited, in memory only and for a few days at most.
On the website you can also leave a tip through PayPal. PayPal handles that payment under its own privacy terms and shows us your name and e-mail address; we keep them only for our bookkeeping, as the law requires.
If you buy Masjed Plus on the website, Paddle.com Market Ltd (London, UK) sells it to you as the merchant of record and processes the payment under its own privacy terms. Paddle tells us your e-mail address, country and which plan you bought, so we can turn on Plus for your Masjed account.
Masjed Plus and tips
Masjed Plus, Masjed Plus AI and tips are bought through the App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google handle the payment; we never see your name, your payment details or your store account.
To know whether Plus is active, the app asks the store on your phone. When you are not signed in, the answer stays on your phone.
When you are signed in, Plus works on all your devices: the app sends the store's proof of your purchase (a purchase record Apple signed, or Google's purchase token) to our server. Our server asks Apple or Google whether it is still running, and keeps with your account which purchase it is, its plan and until when. When you buy while signed in, the store keeps a code for your Masjed account with the purchase; the code is made from your account number, and the store never sees the number itself. This is deleted with your account; the subscription itself you cancel in the store.
Camera and notifications
The camera is used only to scan QR codes, and the scan happens on your phone. On Android, the scanner is part of Google Play services, which may send usage statistics to Google.
Athan and reminder alerts are scheduled on your phone. We use no push service.
Your account
An account is optional. You need one only to run a mosque: reading and reciting the Quran, prayer times and everything else work without one. Without an account, your progress and settings stay on your device and are not sent to us; if you make one later, they join it.
You can create it with your e-mail address and a password, or with Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. We store a password only as a secure hash. With Apple or Google, they tell us an id that stands for you in our app only, your e-mail address (Apple may give a private relay address that forwards to you) and, once, your name if you share it. We get no password and nothing else from your Apple or Google account; they handle the sign-in under their own privacy terms.
We send e-mails only about your account. When you create an account with a password, we send a link to confirm your e-mail address (accounts from before got one too), and a new one when you ask for it; it works for 7 days. When you tap “Forgot password?”, we send a link to choose a new password; it works for one hour. We also send a short note when your password was changed with such a link, or when a new way to sign in was added. These e-mails go out through Google Workspace (Google Ireland Limited, Dublin), which handles your address and the message for us.
Your account keeps your recitation progress: the days and minutes you recited, which ayat the app followed, the ayat you know by heart, the words you said wrong more than once, and the goals you set. It is saved on your phone first and then on our server, so it is not lost and shows on all your devices. Each device gets a random number so its records can be added up; it names nothing else.
Your account also keeps your app settings, so they are the same on all your devices: the language and look, how your prayer times are made (the place you chose or your device found, the mosque you follow, an imported timetable), alerts, the athan voice and adhkar reminders, your Quran settings, your bookmarks and the page you read last. Permissions such as notifications and location are not shared: you give them on each device.
You can delete your account in the app at any time. This deletes everything saved with it: your progress and goals, your settings, your sign-ins, and the mosques you own with their screens and timetables. If you signed in with Apple, we also ask Apple to end our app's access. A security log of sign-ins and changes, with IP address, is kept for 180 days. How to delete your account.
If you run a mosque
Other admins of the same mosque can see your e-mail address and name.
Your mosque's name, city and times are public, so people can follow it. It appears in the mosque search only if you choose that.
A mosque screen pairs with a short code and needs no account. It tells our server its platform, for example "android-tv", and its app version, and checks in regularly.
Our server
Our server is in Germany. Like every web server, it sees your IP address. For each request it logs the time, the address without its query, the result and your IP address, to keep the service safe and to find errors. These logs are overwritten automatically once they reach a fixed size. Limits against misuse are kept in memory only.
This website sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies: fonts and images come from our own server. The web app keeps your settings in your browser, not on our server.
Why we may use this data
We use data only to give you what you ask for (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) and to keep the service secure (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We do not sell data and do not use it for advertising.
Your rights
You can ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, limit or object to its use, and take it with you. Write to the address above. You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example the one in Lower Saxony (Die Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz Niedersachsen).
Changes
If Masjed changes how it uses data, we will update this page.
